Different Types of Articles
When you conduct a study, you need to share your findings with the scientific community and the best way to do so is to publish your findings in a scientific journal. Scientific journals are the places where the knowledge of a field, the results of studies in a specific field and researchers’ viewpoints can be found. When the researchers read your findings or when you examine other researchers’ findings which are published in the journals, you know which areas have been investigated and what other areas need further investigation. Therefore, journal articles are usually reports of research that have not been published before. But, first let’s learn about different types of articles. In general, we have five types of articles. They include empirical studies, literature reviews, theoretical articles, methodological articles, and case studies. In this book we mostly focus on empirical articles as well as literature review articles. Therefore, these two types of articles will be explained in this chapter.
Empirical article
When you conduct a study, you get access to original data and test hypotheses or form hypotheses by analyzing the data which belong to you. This type of study is called an empirical study. Empirical studies usually consist of four main sections: an introduction section, a method section, a result section, and a discussion section. Sometimes researchers may use different terminology and use the word methodology instead of method. Also, some authors add a conclusion section after the discussion section of their articles or combine the conclusion and discussion in one section called discussion and conclusions. Each section will be explained in detail later.
Literature review
When you read and study previous articles and you write a critical summary of them, the result will be a literature review article. By critical review, it is meant that as the author you should try to analyze the previous studies and point out their problems, refer to their strengths and finally reach your own conclusion.
