There are many phrases in English which are not meant to be taken literally. If we hear that someone has kicked the bucket, for instance, we know that the person concerned has not actually kicked a bucket. We know that the speaker means that a person has died. Most of the time we use such phrases without much thought, but there comes a time when we ask ourselves, why do we say that? Why do we try not to let the cat out of the bag or have our heart in the mouth? This book sets out to give a brief explanation of these and similar metaphorical phrases. By using this book, teachers in English classes can help their students to have the new expressions imprinted on their minds and consequently this leads to a meaningful learning of the expressions. The sources used in writing this book are among the most reliable English sources, including Collins COBUILD Idioms Dictionary, Oxford Idioms Dictionary, Dictionary of Curious Phrases, Words and Their Stories and Longman American Idioms Dictionary.
